WP7

WP7 – Saxony (Germany)

23-24 November 2026 In-situ Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V.

Topic

Workshop in Lower-Saxony, followed by a visit to Bergen-Belsen memorial.

Objectives

Using the site of Bergen-Belsen as a foundation, the workshop combines analogue and digital approaches to Holocaust remembrance. Pupils work with digital testimonies and historical material to understand both the systemic nature of persecution and the role of local populations. The active involvement of descendants of survivors allows for intergenerational dialogue. A core element is the critical reflection on complicity and moral agency—then and now.

Program description

Remembering the Shoah – Strengthening Tolerance Through the educational project "Remembering the Shoah – Strengthening Tolerance," the German association Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V., dedicated to political and cultural education, is taking part in the European initiative WITNESS-REM. The programme's educational offerings examine the history of the Shoah and NS-era persecution, while illuminating the enduring significance of remembrance, democracy, human dignity, and tolerance in the present day.

This November, two of the project's eight educational programs will take place, the second of which is:

Lower Saxony – Bergen-Belsen Memorial
A group of students from Lower Saxony will engage with persecution, the camp's history, liberation, survival, and its lasting impact. Biographical approaches and engagement with survivor testimonies will prompt reflection on how remembrance can be carried forward today. On the second day, the group will visit the Bergen-Belsen Memorial for a seminar and guided tour.
